Speaker 1:

Hey everyone, welcome back to Private Club Radio, where we discuss any and all topics private club related, that's Private Club, country Club, city Club, yacht Club, golf Club, athletic Club, all the clubs. Whether you're a consummate professional in the world of private clubs or brand new to the industry, welcome. My name is Denny Corby. I'm your host In this episode. It's going to be short, but I just want to talk about something that's pushing my buttons and that is nose blindness. Nose blindness this has come up a couple of times in conversation over the past couple of weeks in different capacities with different people, and it needs to be addressed. I've been to plenty of clubs and when you walk in there's a funk, there's a smell, there's something that just isn't pleasant, and sometimes it's right. When you walk in, sometimes it's certain parts of the club, Oftentimes it's in bathrooms or washrooms, locker rooms I mean, I know that's where people get changed and everything. But I think people need to be aware of the funk. And nose blindness is a temporary, naturally occurring adaptation of your body that leads to an inability to detect or distinguish common sense in your surroundings, oftentimes called olfactory fatigue. So nose blindness is often associated with areas where we spend a lot of time, which makes total sense. It's why, when we have a hard time detecting common household odors, to me, I'm just a big fan of smell and sense and I know how important it could be, not just for, obviously, your personal self and your home and things, but for our clubs. I don't think our clubs should have a funk. They should have an amazing smell and even better if our clubs have their own unique and custom sense and smells and fragrances which, spoiler alert sometime next year I'm going to have one of my friends on who is a synthologist. She's a scent scientist. This woman is absolutely amazing. I want to bring her on and we're just going to talk about smell and scent and what that all means and how it triggers different emotions and reactions and the importance of it. Anyway, this is just a little public service announcement about understanding and realizing, or maybe not realizing, how your facilities smell. If you're not sure, ask Maybe a nice trusted person, or just look at people's faces as they come in, both members and nonmembers, especially people who haven't been there before. I think very important. So what causes nose blindness? Old factory fatigue? I like that one, but it's hard to say sometimes. No, but it's basically, our bodies get acclimated, they get accustomed to the smells and it's a natural adaptation. By decreasing the perception of sense that you're frequently or consistently or constantly exposed to, nose blindness helps prevent overstimulation of your senses so it can focus on other things, because what it does is by decreasing your ability to detect the common smells that you and your body are used to. It makes it easier for your body to pick up on something that's more out of the ordinary, like burning toast bread, gas leak toots and I'm just reading this now off healthlinecom is how exactly does nose blindness work and happen? Interesting that the biological details behind the mechanism of nose blindness are unknown. However, they do have a general picture of what goes on in your body when it happens. For example, when you inhale an odorants scent molecule, it binds to a receptor on a special type of sensory nerve cell that detects scents. This nerve cell produces an electrical signal that reaches your brain. Your brain then goes on to process the scent. With repeated or continuous stimulation by a particular odorant, the nerve cell eventually stops sending its electrical signal to your brain. As a result, you no longer perceive the scent. Essentially, you become nose blind. According to research not mine but healthlinecom, which it did pop up high in the search. So should be good, should be good info. But nose blindness is dependent on how an odorant enters the body. Research has shown that there is a greater impact on nose blindness if the odor is inhaled through your nose as opposed to through your mouth. I would hope so. Nose blindness seems to develop faster in response to unpleasant smells as opposed to pleasant smells, which also makes sense. Toots, the shape and chemical properties of an odorant can influence how quickly or slowly nose blindness occurs. That makes sense also. So, yeah, let's make sure all of our places smell amazing. Let's make sure our clubs smell good. Let's ask our members, let's ask some trusted people and if there is a funk, if there is a smell somewhere, let's get rid of it, let's handle it. I hate the response when you mention it to somebody, whether it's a club or not, and it's like oh yeah, I got to take care of that. Man smells a big thing, take care of it. So that's it, just a quick little update on nose blindness. And let's make sure all of our spaces smell amazing. Hope you enjoyed this episode.
