00:00:14.683 --> 00:00:20.364
Whether you're a club veteran just getting your feet wet or somewhere in the middle, you are in the right place.

00:00:20.364 --> 00:00:22.088
I'm your host, denny Corby.

00:00:22.088 --> 00:00:23.551
Welcome to the show.

00:00:23.551 --> 00:00:35.954
In this episode I am chatting with a friend of mine, chelsea Foltz, and she's the Director of Membership Communications and Events at Vasari Country Club and we go into her role.

00:00:35.954 --> 00:00:51.262
Going from food and beverage, her and her husband came up in the food and beverage and then was in food and beverage for clubs and her shift from food and beverage to membership and we talk about her journey there, what it was like and how she made that transition and why she made that transition.

00:00:51.262 --> 00:00:53.972
And it was leading to our next thing, which is building.

00:00:53.972 --> 00:01:01.923
She wants to build a family, so we talk about how she balances a family life with club responsibilities, which is a very important thing.

00:01:01.923 --> 00:01:10.171
Now to more of a hot topic of conversation meeting people where they're at, and it's not about being at the club 70, 180 hours a week.

00:01:10.171 --> 00:01:41.022
It's about finding that balance and she and we talk about that, which is which is really cool and really fun, and we share how she's able to balance it all and her husband owns a restaurant, so it is a very family, centric, hospitality, hospitable family and, seeing as she's been in the industry for so long in so many capacities, you know we talk about the evolution of communications and the roles of the communications, communication roles and what that's been like over the past couple of years, because it's not just about websites and events.

00:01:41.022 --> 00:01:41.483
You know.

00:01:41.483 --> 00:01:52.912
It can now encompass video content, editing, social media, different platforms, different softwares and kind of the evolving tech demands and what that means.

00:01:52.912 --> 00:01:57.379
And then, on the same token, in the same area, you know, navigating membership sales.

00:01:57.379 --> 00:02:00.868
But it's a really good Marcom story.

00:02:00.868 --> 00:02:10.481
Marcom episode story, marcom episode.

00:02:10.502 --> 00:02:12.651
And speaking of Marcom, next week the PCMA annual retreats hosted by yours truly is going to be happening.

00:02:12.651 --> 00:02:13.174
It is going to be a blast.

00:02:13.174 --> 00:02:15.300
If you want to learn more, link in the comments below.

00:02:15.300 --> 00:02:21.473
But it is a full day of Marcom membership marketing sales, you name it.

00:02:21.473 --> 00:02:24.006
Um, we have some fantastic speakers.

00:02:24.006 --> 00:02:26.534
Uh, we have CMA speakers, we have CMAA credits.

00:02:26.534 --> 00:02:27.844
You can get all the credits you want.

00:02:27.844 --> 00:02:30.176
It's going to be a blast and it's only 75 bucks.

00:02:30.176 --> 00:02:33.873
It's going to be up in Neshotic Country Club, new England, november 7th.

00:02:33.873 --> 00:02:34.918
Link in comments below.

00:02:34.918 --> 00:02:37.245
I think we have about five more seats left.

00:02:37.245 --> 00:02:45.092
Big thanks to our show partners Kenneth's member vetting concert golf partners and golf life navigators and myself.

00:02:45.092 --> 00:02:47.104
The Denny Corby experience.

00:02:47.104 --> 00:02:48.389
There's excitement, there's mystery.

00:02:48.389 --> 00:02:50.086
Also there's magic, mind reading and comedy.

00:02:50.086 --> 00:02:52.568
The most fun you guys are going to have guaranteed.

00:02:52.568 --> 00:02:54.867
Let's welcome to the show, Chelsea Foltz.

00:02:54.867 --> 00:03:00.812
So how do you go from food and beverage to membership?

00:03:11.819 --> 00:03:12.080
to membership.

00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:16.056
Um, you know, at the time it was like, obviously I love people because both involve people, the whole industry involves people.

00:03:16.056 --> 00:03:32.370
But at the time that it was happening, um, I was getting married and my husband and I have been together for years, like 17 years, 10 years at the point that we were getting married and we are both doing food and beverage in clubs, so obviously very demanding.

00:03:32.370 --> 00:03:34.026
No, we never saw each other.

00:03:34.026 --> 00:03:39.545
The days off that we had, like you know, during the summer, never matched, so it was very rare.

00:03:39.545 --> 00:03:46.366
And and then we wanted kids, obviously, and we have four of them now.

00:03:46.366 --> 00:03:49.181
But, um, at the time it was like, how are?

00:03:49.181 --> 00:03:49.622
Yeah, I know.

00:03:51.887 --> 00:03:52.388
That's a lot.

00:03:53.389 --> 00:03:53.810
It's a lot.

00:03:53.849 --> 00:03:54.390
Healthy pack.

00:03:55.212 --> 00:03:56.334
It's a lot, um.

00:03:56.334 --> 00:03:59.449
So it was like how, how do we manage that?

00:03:59.449 --> 00:04:02.659
Cause all of our family, um, doesn't live in Florida.

00:04:02.659 --> 00:04:14.021
They all live in Pennsylvania and, um, and now, four kids later and seven years later, uh, my in-laws are here seasonally, but still it's not constant, um.

00:04:14.021 --> 00:04:16.252
So it was like how, how do we do that?

00:04:16.252 --> 00:04:31.752
And at the time that we were getting married, so before we even like we're having kids, it was like right, as we were getting married, um, there is, uh, a girl in the position of communications and social here at Vasari and she it was the week of my wedding.

00:04:31.752 --> 00:04:34.588
Irma had happened three weeks before.

00:04:34.588 --> 00:04:37.480
We were all crazy because we had to move all of our wedding stuff.

00:04:37.480 --> 00:04:43.470
And she's announcing that at that time that when she has a baby in December, that she's not coming back.

00:04:44.952 --> 00:04:59.673
And in the midst of all of this, I'm like, hey, um, I don't have a lot of time to talk about it Cause there's like things, other things going on, but when I get back from my honeymoon, if you haven't made a decision, I want to tell you that I'm really interested in switching positions.

00:04:59.673 --> 00:05:11.285
Um, because part of the position was like the event side, so it still had that food and beverage aspect, and I don't know if you've ever worked food and beverage, but food and beverage is addicting, like I love it.

00:05:11.285 --> 00:05:12.007
I still love it.

00:05:12.007 --> 00:05:20.807
Um, it took a while to like kind of like move myself like out of it as much as I have because I love to dabble in it.

00:05:20.807 --> 00:05:27.822
Um, and on the side my husband and I own a restaurant anyway, it's pizzeria so like I get to dabble in it.

00:05:27.822 --> 00:05:30.728
Yeah, so very busy Um.

00:05:31.108 --> 00:05:39.471
So like I had said that I was interested and, um, and really the only I shouldn't say the only thing there's a lot to learn.

00:05:39.471 --> 00:05:42.127
But like I already knew systems, I already knew the people.

00:05:42.127 --> 00:05:50.807
Um, the biggest thing was the communications aspect and like, um, running the website.

00:05:50.807 --> 00:06:12.153
So like I had kind of done it, but not not to the extent, um, but you know I got to learn, I got to self-learn and like spend a lot of time on webinars and stuff to learn it and, um, but it was mainly to have a better balance work life Um, I mean, my club already provides a really good one.

00:06:12.153 --> 00:06:15.870
But again, like, when you're in food and beverage, you know that you're working crazy hours.

00:06:15.870 --> 00:06:20.932
So switching to a for the most part Monday through Friday, like eight 30 to five job.

00:06:20.932 --> 00:06:25.970
Um was necessary, um again, both being in the careers.

00:06:25.970 --> 00:06:29.182
But the fact that I still get to stay close to it, I love it.

00:06:29.744 --> 00:06:30.906
Yeah, yeah.

00:06:30.906 --> 00:06:39.632
So what were some of the biggest challenges, going from food and beverage dining room manager to now communications and social media?

00:06:41.279 --> 00:06:52.249
Um again, um really pulling back from that and like cause those the things that I do, I, I, I have to spend a lot of time in my office.

00:06:52.249 --> 00:07:09.627
Um, so like not going around and like talking to some of the members and like spending that time on the floor, um checking for food and things and kind of like in some ways taking my opinion out of it because I'm not in there anymore, but putting my opinion into somewhere else.

00:07:09.627 --> 00:07:35.165
Um the movement and having to to the desk job, which I love, and I love working on computers, um, but the sometimes the social part of it too, and like I have the membership side on in my position so I get to talk to members, but like in the beginning stages, um so like expanding on those relationships sometimes is easier in food and beverage than the initial.

00:07:35.165 --> 00:07:38.973
So just pulling back was was hard at first.

00:07:40.122 --> 00:07:43.829
But what does the role of communications entail?

00:07:43.829 --> 00:07:46.512
At the sorry, it's like what are your responsibilities?

00:07:46.512 --> 00:07:47.454
What are you handling?

00:07:47.454 --> 00:07:48.504
What are what, what?

00:07:48.504 --> 00:07:49.466
What falls under you?

00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:55.288
And yeah, so just communications are my entire position.

00:07:56.380 --> 00:08:03.935
So not currently for director of membership, but like going back to when you were going from food and beverage to communications.

00:08:04.036 --> 00:08:08.810
Communications going back to when you were going from food and beverage to communications, communications, so the communications, just it was the website.

00:08:08.810 --> 00:08:28.415
Um, and managing the website they had, just shortly before I had started in the position, had switched from I think it was called flex gate I had never worked with it um to club essential um, so, uh, helping figure that out, teaching members how to use it.

00:08:28.415 --> 00:08:37.875
We did tech classes, so website in general, the emails, flyers for events, helping with menus.

00:08:37.875 --> 00:09:00.687
We hadn't really dabbled into video at that time, um, but it was shortly after that we were starting to talk about doing a renovation, which then started me into learning how to do video, which was fun and it's still something that I really love to get into and just kind of learn.

00:09:00.687 --> 00:09:09.104
I remember the first time that they had asked me to do a video, I had Adobe, so I used what, what was that Adobe premiere?

00:09:09.104 --> 00:09:14.669
And I spent like days watching YouTube videos to learn how to use it.

00:09:14.669 --> 00:09:22.655
And then I had a committee at the time and the one member was like she was, she was a huge Mac user, um, and she goes you need a Mac book.

00:09:22.655 --> 00:09:24.938
And I was like I'm not going to argue with you.

00:09:24.938 --> 00:09:39.376
And she goes final cut is just so much easier to use and I said okay, so they got me a Mac book, um, and I again spent time on YouTube and also went to Apple to have some classes to learn how to use that and that's what I've been using ever since.

00:09:39.376 --> 00:09:44.434
So, um and I, when we went through renovation, we did videos constantly.

00:09:44.434 --> 00:09:45.976
We kind of got to get back into that.

00:09:45.976 --> 00:09:49.302
But, um, so that was like it kind of progressed.

00:09:49.482 --> 00:10:07.923
And social media when I first started majority of my time and it took a while and I'm sure many people that have ever messed with like Facebook pages and all that to try to figure out how to get them, because it had been previous management that started them and never like left information for it.

00:10:07.923 --> 00:10:13.964
So to like, like, at one point there was a Facebook page that you could log into.

00:10:13.964 --> 00:10:27.921
That wasn't run by like um, a personal account, because you have to have the personal account right now, but there was like this page and I remember at one point someone was like yeah, we, we took some video and it's on the page, and I was like, no, it's not.

00:10:27.921 --> 00:10:29.606
And there it was on like this.

00:10:29.606 --> 00:10:31.875
I was like, yeah, we, we took some video and it's on the page and I was like, no, it's not.

00:10:31.875 --> 00:10:35.496
And there it was on like this.

00:10:35.517 --> 00:10:36.600
I was like, how did you even get into that?

00:10:36.600 --> 00:10:37.403
Um, getting the LinkedIn page back?

00:10:37.403 --> 00:10:44.159
I had to figure out who had that access and thankfully, uh, a head golf professional was one of, like, the admins.

00:10:44.159 --> 00:10:46.163
Somehow he didn't even know he was.

00:10:46.163 --> 00:11:01.842
So a lot of time was like spent trying to to get those pieces back, um, and then slowly start to to utilize them, um, and then figure out how to best utilize them Um.

00:11:01.842 --> 00:11:05.870
So that's, that was the beginning of the job.

00:11:06.797 --> 00:11:17.418
What were some of your biggest learning takeaways, and maybe learning moments or just things that you took in that maybe you still use today from that position of communications?

00:11:19.360 --> 00:11:21.004
um, I mean everything.

00:11:21.004 --> 00:11:22.966
I still do all of the communications.

00:11:22.966 --> 00:11:30.129
My, my title is like if you would go on, it would be director of membership communications and like an events.

00:11:30.129 --> 00:11:35.946
Yeah, so I do, I do um, yeah, I do the membership here.

00:11:35.946 --> 00:11:40.386
Um, and we're a bundled community so you have to buy property to be the member.

00:11:40.386 --> 00:11:44.525
Uh, but the still there's all the same aspects of trying to sell the club.

00:11:44.525 --> 00:11:48.797
I do all the communications and then I do our member events, of trying to sell the club.

00:11:48.797 --> 00:11:50.058
I do all the communications and then I do our member events.

00:11:50.058 --> 00:11:54.347
So not any of the outside weddings, luncheons, like outside bookings, but all of member events.

00:11:54.347 --> 00:11:57.259
That's a lot of work.

00:11:57.259 --> 00:12:06.860
So I wear a lot of hats and thankfully, my managers in the last year have had really pushed to get me an assistant.

00:12:06.860 --> 00:12:13.900
So I have an assistant that helps with um, social media, um and my events.

00:12:13.900 --> 00:12:18.506
So that's been a person huge in person.

00:12:18.506 --> 00:12:20.850
Yes, yes, she is amazing.

00:12:20.850 --> 00:12:26.105
Full-time, yes, Wow, yes, yes.

00:12:26.105 --> 00:12:27.788
So that position is good.

00:12:28.294 --> 00:12:35.244
I want to say how, how long and how hard did you fight for that and at what point were you like okay, this is now like a.

00:12:35.244 --> 00:12:49.299
This needs to be a more serious conversation, because I think it says that they need an assistant, and when you really break it down, a lot of people can use it, because we spend a lot of time doing non what's the word I'm looking for, like non good revenue.

00:12:49.299 --> 00:12:52.437
You know, the time is not well spent doing what.

00:12:52.437 --> 00:12:55.423
What are, yes, are wow.

00:12:55.423 --> 00:12:58.918
I'm horrible with the words today, uh, but I get what you're saying.

00:12:59.038 --> 00:13:31.783
Yeah, so go ahead no, I was just gonna say, like um, I've been for about four years, at least four years, especially when we started to get into the video, and it was like I'm going, depending on where you all see this position going, if it's going to stay all together, I'm going to need some assistance, because already by that point I had been pulling in one of my coworkers who her her title is an HOA administrator, but she was helping with some of the membership stuff, and then it was again.

00:13:31.783 --> 00:13:40.975
They're asking for more video, more this, more that, and I'm like I'm I'm one person.

00:13:40.975 --> 00:13:43.559
You're also asking, like this committee is asking for more things in the communication side.

00:13:43.559 --> 00:13:44.441
You want more video.

00:13:44.441 --> 00:13:46.664
This committee for social activities is asking for more events.

00:13:46.664 --> 00:13:51.673
Um, I, I'm only one person, um.

00:13:51.673 --> 00:14:08.148
So it started with kind of keeping track of what they're asking for, what time it takes to do certain things, um, because other like, for example, our body, um was becoming, it was growing, and then they wanted me to help with that.

00:14:08.148 --> 00:14:14.927
So it's like I can say yes, but I can't give 100% to all three of those positions.

00:14:14.927 --> 00:14:28.345
So we just started to keep track of that and now, two years ago, we tried on the front of adding a communications manager and then, unfortunately, the finance committee shut that down right away.

00:14:28.345 --> 00:14:31.794
Um, and then, unfortunately, the finance committee like, shut that down right away.

00:14:31.855 --> 00:14:38.028
And then, um, my current assistant had started as our front desk receptionist and it was a season of where there was a lot of change.

00:14:38.028 --> 00:14:42.466
Um, our food and beverage director was leaving, who had been there for a long period of time.

00:14:42.466 --> 00:14:51.671
Our head golf professional was leaving, um, with the food and beverage director, our assistant F&B director had left too was leaving what the food and beverage director, our assistant F&B director, had left to.

00:14:51.671 --> 00:15:00.543
And again, pulling in from that food and beverage background, they're asking me to help, which was fine, except for then I needed assistance.

00:15:00.543 --> 00:15:01.966
So her name's Kelly, kelly.

00:15:02.066 --> 00:15:08.899
Whenever she had come in and taken the receptionist job was, like you know, I'm really interested in events, so I want to know what I can learn from you.

00:15:08.899 --> 00:15:28.682
And so I had started to pull her in to help with certain things and it started with flyers, um, and just registrations and then floor plans, and it just kind of grew from there and at that time we are also making again lists of what events that I have every year.

00:15:28.682 --> 00:15:30.606
And then we took that and like.

00:15:30.606 --> 00:15:43.649
From the time I started until like that point of that year I think I had increased our events and the bookings that I had to do by like 60 something percent, and it's like 60, six, zero, six, zero.

00:15:43.649 --> 00:15:49.979
So and like, and that could be something as simple as like just doing like an afternoon game, but that still takes my time.

00:15:49.979 --> 00:15:53.822
So it kind of started to push the envelope.

00:15:53.822 --> 00:16:02.528
For this is what we need, this is what I need, and my bosses were both behind it, cause, you know, again, this committee is asking for more.

00:16:02.528 --> 00:16:03.769
This committee is asking for more.

00:16:03.769 --> 00:16:08.638
The board is asking for this, which is all great, and they should absolutely have more.

00:16:08.638 --> 00:16:12.215
The board is asking for this, which is all great and they should absolutely have.

00:16:14.075 --> 00:16:17.923
And I will be honest, social activities kind of took like that top tier for a while, cause that's like the member experience, that's physical.

00:16:17.923 --> 00:16:30.697
So you know, a video is nice and it's great and it's fun, but like they can sit and dab bingo cards and win money and that's a lot more fun for them than watching something that I might be able to produce.

00:16:30.697 --> 00:16:43.501
So she stepped in full-time, it got approved, she stepped in full-time in November and then unfortunately she had to go back to the front desk for a little bit because the person we hired had left.

00:16:43.501 --> 00:16:48.197
So she got stuck till around February up there doing a little bit of both.

00:16:48.197 --> 00:16:50.344
But ever since she's been great.

00:16:50.735 --> 00:17:04.022
And it's funny because when I told her I said you do know, one of the reasons that you were hired is not only planning events but doing them and some of the things you have to speak to the members.

00:17:04.022 --> 00:17:07.237
You have to talk on a microphone and she goes Chelsea.

00:17:07.237 --> 00:17:19.961
I'm definitely afraid of a microphone and I was like sorry, um, and my my boss was like just throw her into it and I said I'm not, I can't do that because I want her to stay.

00:17:19.961 --> 00:17:26.339
So I remember that one of the first games that we ran, I said I'm going to do, you're going to sit with me.

00:17:26.339 --> 00:17:33.388
And then the second time we did it, I did half of it, she finished it and then ever since she's been doing it herself.

00:17:33.388 --> 00:17:37.720
So thankful for that.

00:17:38.320 --> 00:17:39.624
Yeah, where did you.

00:17:39.624 --> 00:17:49.343
So we're going to come back to this a little bit more and more, like the membership stuff, because you you, from what I'm understanding, you've got your assistant, but you didn't just ask for it.

00:17:49.343 --> 00:17:54.759
You put together a plan almost and said like, okay, I knew I can't just go and ask, and if I do they're going to say no.

00:17:54.759 --> 00:18:01.846
So you start putting together how long tasks take, getting all that information ready to present to them to go.

00:18:01.846 --> 00:18:07.961
Hey, to show your case when you're, is it Kelly?

00:18:07.961 --> 00:18:18.499
You said, mm-hmm, yes, so you have Kelly and you knew you wanted her to do well, and instead of just throwing her right in going, you know, hey, come and sit with me, come and do you have these steps?

00:18:19.019 --> 00:18:20.604
It was this a learned thing.

00:18:20.604 --> 00:18:22.387
Did you learn this in school?

00:18:22.387 --> 00:18:26.357
I mean, is it like a, a mate, like a mom thing?

00:18:26.357 --> 00:18:28.500
Is it like your upbringing?

00:18:28.500 --> 00:18:29.942
Like, were you always like this?

00:18:29.942 --> 00:18:31.123
Was it learned?

00:18:31.123 --> 00:18:32.023
Was it taught?

00:18:32.023 --> 00:18:34.486
Like, where did this come from?

00:18:34.486 --> 00:18:37.087
Because a lot of people it's not like a first instinct.

00:18:37.087 --> 00:18:41.251
They just be like, oh, yeah, just put them on the mic and they'll be fine, but you're like, oh, like, let's take it a little bit slower.

00:18:43.297 --> 00:18:43.577
Like let's.

00:18:43.577 --> 00:18:46.242
You know, I honestly I don't know.

00:18:46.242 --> 00:19:07.781
I feel like I've just always been that kind of manager Cause even like it's been a while since I've had someone to manage, like seven years in between, like food and beverage and me getting the assistant, so I think it was just, I mean, it was that was me even before being a mom.

00:19:07.781 --> 00:19:22.779
So I the mom thing is probably correct um, with the continuation and not wanting to throw her into it, because I feel like there was sometimes in my career that I was just thrown into things and, you know, come out successful.

00:19:22.779 --> 00:19:29.817
I'm still here, I'm still standing, I'm still doing what I'm doing, um, but wanting like someone to help me along the way.

00:19:29.817 --> 00:19:44.676
And I've had, I've had some really great managers like they're to just help and teach and show or at least be there, even if they're not like standing physically there with me doing something I know I can go to them.

00:19:44.676 --> 00:19:54.067
I still remember um, one of um I it was, I was late, I was um, I was late, I was.

00:19:54.689 --> 00:20:01.049
I was working at the Waldorf um in Naples it's now called something else, but I still remember like I overslept Um.

00:20:01.049 --> 00:20:07.352
I worked like the six o'clock morning shift and it was a continuous like and it was great.

00:20:07.352 --> 00:20:13.535
But I overslept and there was, uh, there was a breakfast shift or breakfast like meeting.

00:20:13.535 --> 00:20:29.334
There was something I can't remember specifics, but I remember being late for whatever it was and when I got there I felt so guilty Because at that point my bosses aren't there but the staff is there and I had called them.

00:20:29.334 --> 00:20:30.422
I was like, hey, I'm on my way.

00:20:30.422 --> 00:20:37.001
But I still felt guilty Because, again, unless they go and tell my bosses, no one's going to know that I'm late.

00:20:37.001 --> 00:20:43.869
But I remember going to my my boss's name was Eddie and I was like you know, I'm so sorry I was late.

00:20:43.869 --> 00:20:51.905
I know that there was like these few people that were supposed to be at breakfast, um, and I had called and I talked to so-and-so and and they said everything was great.

00:20:51.905 --> 00:20:54.308
And he was like it's okay, it happens.

00:20:54.308 --> 00:21:00.681
And I was like you know, that's so nice to like, just have that support, even though I felt so guilty.

00:21:01.603 --> 00:21:17.301
But just having those kinds of managers that were tough, I mean he was a tough boss but he was good and he was understanding and you know, I think, having that, and then leading into, I had my boss, I have a new GM.

00:21:17.301 --> 00:21:27.009
He's been here for a couple weeks, but for the past almost 9 years I had a gentleman named Steve and Steve has been an amazing boss and he has been the same way.

00:21:27.009 --> 00:21:30.431
You just go and talk to him about whatever you need and he will be there.

00:21:30.431 --> 00:22:02.465
And he does like to throw you into some things, but he's also there and that's why he was like you know, you're here, so if you just throw her onto a mic, you're still here, which is true, um, but the way that she had been talking about how she was scared about it, I was like I again, I don't want to lose you and if I throw you onto a mic, you know I might not see you tomorrow, you might walk out before I give you that mic.

00:22:04.148 --> 00:22:13.230
So you know, just kind of being aware of the situations, I feel like I've always been pretty decent about that and just helping guide people.

00:22:13.230 --> 00:22:17.704
Yeah, I don't know decent about that and just helping guide people.

00:22:17.724 --> 00:22:18.105
Yeah, I don't know.

00:22:18.105 --> 00:22:23.884
You can call it a mom instinct mummery um, yes, mummery, I like that so now.

00:22:23.884 --> 00:22:29.452
So, director of membership what is that like and how did that come about?

00:22:29.452 --> 00:22:36.113
You know so, was somebody pregnant again and didn't want to come back, or no, we never had a director.

00:22:36.212 --> 00:22:43.432
No, no, um no, we actually never had a director of membership.

00:22:43.673 --> 00:22:45.541
Asking who's getting pregnant to see like what.

00:22:45.541 --> 00:22:46.925
What positions are coming up?

00:22:48.249 --> 00:22:49.211
yeah, no, we.

00:22:49.211 --> 00:22:52.140
We actually never had a director of membership.

00:22:52.140 --> 00:23:05.926
Um, for all the years that I've been here, the person that handled membership was the communications and social manager, and the title didn't make sense, right, that doesn't make sense if you're dealing with membership too.

00:23:05.926 --> 00:23:08.613
So, essentially, I Doing membership.

00:23:08.613 --> 00:23:12.826
Yeah, so essentially I just got a title promotion.

00:23:12.826 --> 00:23:14.872
I've been doing the same thing.

00:23:14.872 --> 00:23:26.673
I had been asking again for what seemed like a number of years to have a change in title, and I finally got that one too.

00:23:28.823 --> 00:23:31.186
Yeah, yeah, wow, I don't think I realized that.

00:23:31.186 --> 00:23:34.071
I'm so sorry, that's a lot, that's okay, that was already a lot of work.

00:23:34.071 --> 00:24:06.641
That's three positions in one and that happens a lot, I feel like, at clubs and it's becoming, from my perspective, uh, a more common topic, a more common conversation is like hey, membership, community, these are legitimate positions that require talent and people and thought, and it's not admin like this is this is a position, this is this is like gm level, like thought, thoughtfulness, you know, like deeper things to think.

00:24:06.641 --> 00:24:09.028
It's not just like, oh, you like the club, you ought to sign up.

00:24:09.028 --> 00:24:13.527
Like no, there's yeah, no like there's yeah sale.

00:24:13.547 --> 00:24:14.490
Like sales is a.

00:24:14.490 --> 00:24:16.420
That's a whole other conversation.

00:24:16.420 --> 00:24:18.386
Like sales is like a thing yeah.

00:24:19.068 --> 00:24:20.681
Wow, yeah.

00:24:20.681 --> 00:24:36.854
So whenever I first started in the membership communications position, it was back in like December of 17, I think, and the there was a realtor that came in and they wanted a tour.

00:24:36.854 --> 00:24:41.290
And the front desk person at the time was like, who gives tours?

00:24:41.290 --> 00:24:44.048
And there's a lady that was like, well, no one gives tours.

00:24:44.048 --> 00:24:48.090
And I said when I give the tour, I'm membership.

00:24:50.424 --> 00:24:53.660
And again, some things were passed through with training and some weren't.

00:24:53.660 --> 00:24:55.740
Most of it was on the website side of things.

00:24:55.740 --> 00:25:08.314
So I learned a lot as I went and I was like but if I am the one that's opening the membership, why would I not be the one to tell a prospective person that like about the club?

00:25:08.314 --> 00:25:10.488
And they're like, well, no, that's the realtor's job.

00:25:10.488 --> 00:25:13.088
And I was like, but how does the realtor know?

00:25:13.088 --> 00:25:18.344
Like the information?

00:25:18.344 --> 00:25:20.269
And like, well, they should be asking you for it?

00:25:20.269 --> 00:25:31.584
Like, okay, well, I have been giving tours while I was in food and beverage because on Saturday or Sunday afternoons, when everyone was doing an open house, they would stop by the club and they would ask for a tour.

00:25:31.584 --> 00:25:36.173
And if I was available, because it was usually in that in-between time, I would take them on a tour.

00:25:36.173 --> 00:25:40.490
So why not Selling the club?

00:25:40.490 --> 00:25:41.942
So yeah.

00:25:43.079 --> 00:25:44.948
So at first it was like no, we don't do tours.

00:25:44.948 --> 00:25:46.747
But I was like, no, I do tours.

00:25:46.747 --> 00:26:04.529
So it's kind of evolved over the years, getting more involved with realtors, getting some of their feedback on, you know, likes, dislikes, like you know, even our website, like, what would you like added to our website that you seem to be asking for.

00:26:04.529 --> 00:26:09.917
So it's it's definitely been different over the years.

00:26:09.917 --> 00:26:15.023
But again, whenever I first started it was no, you don't do tours, I was like I have to sell the club.

00:26:15.023 --> 00:26:18.930
Like the realtor sells the house, we sell the community.

00:26:18.930 --> 00:26:32.406
Like where's we are explaining that the, the lifestyle, the experience that they're going to have here at this club, like, so the realtor can't give that unless they live here or work here, you know.

00:26:32.406 --> 00:26:36.153
So that that that's been a change over the last seven years.

00:26:37.080 --> 00:26:38.324
Wow, what are what?

00:26:38.344 --> 00:26:39.487
are some of the biggest.

00:26:40.009 --> 00:26:40.209
I know.

00:26:40.209 --> 00:26:46.019
I kind of asked with you know when it when it was with a communicate, but so now you're, you know you got the title director of membership.

00:26:46.019 --> 00:26:53.769
Looking back, you know you're talking to somebody who's just getting started in communications membership, that sort of you know this sort of world.

00:26:53.769 --> 00:26:56.762
What, what advice, what have you learned?

00:26:56.762 --> 00:27:00.721
What are some things that you can share with someone who might just be getting started?

00:27:00.721 --> 00:27:06.053
That's good information to know about how to be really good at club membership.

00:27:07.920 --> 00:27:09.723
Honestly, just confidence.

00:27:09.723 --> 00:27:21.971
If you think that something will work, even though it's something that's different from what has been done previously, try it, do it, um, be all in on it and you know.

00:27:21.971 --> 00:27:25.281
If it works, that's great, um, continue with it.

00:27:25.281 --> 00:27:30.333
If it doesn't, at least you know you tried your idea, um and um.

00:27:30.333 --> 00:27:37.849
Also use all of your resources, um, because there's there's so many people, especially when you have your members.

00:27:37.849 --> 00:27:50.522
They all have had their own experiences and careers, and for me it was there's realtors that live within Vasari, that sell Vasari.

00:27:50.522 --> 00:28:03.730
So utilizing, like, what they know and what they are hearing has been to do the new member onboarding and prospective buyer aspect of it.

00:28:03.730 --> 00:28:23.765
So use those resources.

00:28:24.909 --> 00:28:25.309
I like that.

00:28:25.309 --> 00:28:27.949
What are some of your favorite resources?

00:28:29.342 --> 00:28:45.506
Some of my favorite resources, resources, my, my boss, steve well, my old boss, steve and Melissa from old Cyprus, and love all of her content.

00:28:45.506 --> 00:28:45.846
What else?

00:28:45.846 --> 00:29:02.756
I recently rejoined CMAA, so attending those kinds of conferences is nice, and I've been attending the, the communications summit, for a couple of years from CMAA, so just networking and just all the people that I can learn from.

00:29:02.756 --> 00:29:05.868
So that's it, yeah.

00:29:06.359 --> 00:29:22.234
I appreciate you coming on and sharing some wisdom and knowledge, because it is a very important position, important position and I'm happy to be coming more of in, not more of an important position, but more of an important position to the people in clubs that need it, to need to see it.

00:29:22.295 --> 00:29:40.144
The boards, the, the members, yes, um yes, yeah, my board has been pretty great and uh, expanding um their their knowledge on especially like the communications aspect aspect and kind of allowing us to run with it.

00:29:40.144 --> 00:29:59.173
I mean, they're very good at letting us do our thing and sometimes they dig deep because they want to know how it's being done, but they've been really really good in trying to expand the technology and just experiences in general.

00:29:59.173 --> 00:30:01.387
So it's nice to share.

00:30:03.481 --> 00:30:04.506
Hope you all enjoyed that.
