00:01:07.221 --> 00:01:09.367
We also get a little litigious Now.

00:01:09.367 --> 00:01:16.228
We talk about if you might be following the golf industry on the regulatory side.

00:01:16.228 --> 00:01:22.712
Mark breaks down Club Car's recent case with the International Trade Commission to ensure fair competition in the marketplace.

00:01:22.712 --> 00:01:32.007
So we touch on a lot of things, from fun to serious, and Mark's a really funny guy, so he and I click well, so it is a really good conversation.

00:02:24.943 --> 00:02:25.387
Let's get to the show.

00:02:25.387 --> 00:02:26.332
Let's welcome from Club Car, mark Raquel.

00:02:26.332 --> 00:02:27.338
So real quick, who is Mark?

00:02:27.338 --> 00:02:29.646
I mean because you're a funny cat.

00:02:34.965 --> 00:02:37.912
Well, Mark, he's been in the industry.

00:02:37.912 --> 00:02:40.368
Mark Raquel, Club Car VP of Sales.

00:02:40.368 --> 00:02:43.669
I've been in the industry now for 11 years and it's been amazing.

00:02:43.669 --> 00:02:48.522
I started my career, interestingly enough, with Ingersoll Rand.

00:02:48.522 --> 00:03:12.945
I was in the industrial sector supporting industry with compressed air technologies, tools, fluid material handling, all the really boring stuff and I had an opportunity to join Club Car 11 years ago and I haven't looked back and, as I shared with you earlier, I enjoy the long-term relationships that you find here in the golf space and the fact that people are very loyal.

00:03:12.945 --> 00:03:15.350
When you do good things for them, they do good things for you.

00:03:15.350 --> 00:03:16.312
So I've enjoyed it.

00:03:16.312 --> 00:03:17.140
It's been tremendous.

00:03:17.382 --> 00:03:20.768
Yeah, it's a very, very loyal industry.

00:03:20.768 --> 00:03:29.161
Yes, yes, no, that's so cool industry.

00:03:29.161 --> 00:03:29.782
Yes, yes, no, that's so cool.

00:03:29.782 --> 00:03:31.466
So what, what do you like most about being in the club space?

00:03:31.466 --> 00:03:35.381
But I think more specifically, club car, golf carts, I mean, there there is something to be said.

00:03:35.381 --> 00:03:44.288
Where we are as grown adults, I mean I and granted, okay, it might just be me, we can drive vehicles, all these.

00:03:44.288 --> 00:03:50.256
You know things that go super fast, but there's something about just jumping in a golf cart that is just so much fun.

00:03:50.256 --> 00:03:52.682
It just brings out the inner kid Like it is.

00:03:52.682 --> 00:03:55.408
It is amazing it brings the kid out.

00:03:55.468 --> 00:04:10.230
It does, and it's like going go-karting, you know, and I know it's it's not the right choice of words, cause I don't want to send people off in the direction, but you know you have an absolutely great time driving the vehicle and you're kind of a little bit off road, you know, as you're driving through the golf course itself.

00:04:10.230 --> 00:04:15.879
Yeah, so it's a lot of fun, it's open to air and it kind of gives you that 360 degree Jeep experience, if you will.

00:04:15.879 --> 00:04:23.411
So and I would say the other part that's enjoyable about it is you're socializing with your friends, not just playing a game.

00:04:23.411 --> 00:04:25.095
So it's a great time.

00:04:25.839 --> 00:04:30.112
What separates Club Car from everyone else?

00:04:32.300 --> 00:04:38.062
That's a good question and I'm sure it's different from anybody else that you might ask that question to, but I will share.

00:04:38.062 --> 00:04:40.971
I think that for us there's what we call the Club Car difference.

00:04:40.971 --> 00:04:50.367
What we try to do in everything that we create is put a lot of energy and development around the quality and safety and reliability of the car.

00:04:50.367 --> 00:04:56.771
We want people having a great time but we want them going home to their families in the same form they showed up to play.

00:04:56.771 --> 00:05:02.781
So I will also say we have a black and gold culture and that goes all the way down to the line folks.

00:05:02.781 --> 00:05:12.399
These people do a lot for the success of the vehicle performing at these individual golf courses and they have a lot of pride, but that pride is shared through the whole organization.

00:05:12.399 --> 00:05:18.728
So all those elements I think sets the difference between Club Car and the rest of the competitors out there.

00:05:20.151 --> 00:05:21.291
Now, what's the off the record?

00:05:21.291 --> 00:05:46.346
No, but it kind of brings me to why I wanted to talk a little bit today, because it's something I guess I didn't even think about or would even think about, but it's a hot topic, which is the pending action of the ITC International Trade Commission in the Department of Commerce.

00:05:46.346 --> 00:05:47.595
What's going on there?

00:05:49.711 --> 00:05:54.982
Another good question, and certainly it's on the top of a lot of folks' minds.

00:05:54.982 --> 00:05:58.220
Our channel partners are highly engaged in what's happening.

00:05:58.220 --> 00:06:08.055
Certainly the market's highly engaged in what's happening, and what we're facing is just some unfair practices of imports that are coming in and it's affecting the market.

00:06:08.055 --> 00:06:23.321
So we went to the International Trade Commission, we gave testimony and the case was accepted by the Department of Commerce and now we're proceeding with potential tariffs and countervailing duties against those unfair practiced imports.

00:06:23.321 --> 00:06:29.581
So it's a big deal for this industry and if it's not unchecked it could be very damaging.

00:06:29.581 --> 00:06:38.036
What the ITC and the Department of Commerce recognized is it was severe enough that they saw damage, and so that's why it's being pursued.

00:06:38.994 --> 00:06:39.435
Can you go on that?

00:06:39.790 --> 00:06:40.975
Yeah, the pricing element of it?

00:06:40.975 --> 00:06:42.170
Sure, absolutely so.

00:06:42.170 --> 00:06:53.709
In most of these cases, it's a price dumping or anti-dumping campaign, and so the coalition that's working with Club Car is what we're going after, and it's not about getting them out of the market.

00:06:53.709 --> 00:06:59.903
It's getting them to be a fair partner in this marketplace.

00:07:01.629 --> 00:07:02.333
For someone like me.

00:07:02.333 --> 00:07:03.838
Can you dumb that down a little bit more?

00:07:07.089 --> 00:07:07.872
Sure, I'll give you a very good example.

00:07:07.872 --> 00:07:18.341
So if our car costs $10,000 and that's what it cost us to build it, get it into a channel and sell it to one of our customers, they're coming in at, call it, half that rate.

00:07:18.341 --> 00:07:22.656
And I'm making these numbers up but just to show you some of the dynamics, it might be at 5,000.

00:07:22.656 --> 00:07:27.004
Those are subsidized by the importing country's government.

00:07:27.004 --> 00:07:34.987
There's also tax abatements that are applied to that are unfair and there's also discounts that they're applying to the elements of the product, which is unfair.

00:07:34.987 --> 00:07:43.920
So to give you an example of that, that would be steel tariffs that exist today I call it 279% Don't get added into the cost buildup of that car.

00:07:43.920 --> 00:07:48.841
So they come in at a very low rate, but it's all subsidized and we can't compete with that.

00:07:49.442 --> 00:07:49.904
Got you.

00:07:49.904 --> 00:07:53.494
That's definitely tough.

00:07:53.494 --> 00:07:55.237
So now, what is going on?

00:07:55.237 --> 00:07:56.821
What's the movement going forward?

00:07:56.821 --> 00:07:58.124
What are the next steps there?

00:07:59.269 --> 00:08:00.213
Yeah, great question.

00:08:00.213 --> 00:08:02.278
So obviously we got the positive vote.

00:08:02.278 --> 00:08:06.555
It was a unanimous vote and there's a significance to that, and I'll tell you about that in just a second.

00:08:06.555 --> 00:08:28.879
So what happens next is there are hurdles or dates out there in the market that says okay, the Department of Commerce is going to do their due diligence and essentially they go to these manufacturers and they'll do a full audit of the buildup of that product and they will decide what the appropriate tariff needs to be to bring this back to parity in terms of competitiveness in the market.

00:08:28.879 --> 00:08:45.332
The fact that it was a unanimous vote means that there was potentially high damages, so that gives us the opportunity to go pursue countervailing duties, which are all the things that I talked about in terms of subsidy, tax evadements and all these other discounts that they provided on the product.

00:08:45.332 --> 00:08:46.937
So now you have two elements.

00:08:46.937 --> 00:08:48.509
That is supposed to be.

00:08:48.509 --> 00:08:51.716
September 13th is where we get the reading.

00:08:51.716 --> 00:08:53.801
Now it's coming around the corner.

00:08:53.841 --> 00:08:54.864
Friday, the 13th.

00:08:55.710 --> 00:08:57.836
Yeah, september 13th, so that's a critical date.

00:08:57.836 --> 00:09:05.243
Now, what we will expect from that is they'll push that to October because they want to take the time to make sure they're not making a mistake either.

00:09:05.243 --> 00:09:25.715
So fully expect it to be sometime in October that we'll get the full announcement on what the countervailing duties will be, and then in December we'll get the tariff, and so then it will just become, you know, temporary in place, temporarily in place, and then July of next year we'll meet with the department of commerce and everything will be finalized.

00:09:25.715 --> 00:09:26.974
So pretty exciting.

00:09:27.515 --> 00:09:29.995
Kind of Like yes and no.

00:09:29.995 --> 00:09:31.875
Like yes, but also like whew.

00:09:31.875 --> 00:09:32.278
Okay.

00:09:32.278 --> 00:09:37.341
Speaking of exciting though, what exciting products do you guys have in the works?

00:09:37.341 --> 00:09:38.082
Anything?

00:09:38.592 --> 00:09:39.870
We've got a lot of good things happening.

00:09:39.870 --> 00:09:41.533
You know I can't give away.

00:09:41.533 --> 00:09:47.644
You know all the story, but what I can tell you is we're making a lot of introductions to the products that we have today.

00:09:47.644 --> 00:09:57.263
So there'll be some additional technologies, there may be some facial changes to the product, some updates in terms of how you'd be able to use the product.

00:09:57.263 --> 00:10:03.381
That's all coming, Looking forward to the PGA show, because that's our big reveal typically happens at the PGA show.

00:10:03.381 --> 00:10:09.158
So you'll see everything from the golf side of the business to the commercial, to the commercial side, a consumer side.

00:10:09.158 --> 00:10:16.889
So we have three key verticals and those verticals are all growing and expanding and there's a lot of desire for, for new product development.

00:10:16.889 --> 00:10:18.216
So all that's in the works.

00:10:19.630 --> 00:10:20.113
That's fun.

00:10:20.113 --> 00:10:20.916
That's fun.

00:10:20.916 --> 00:10:21.698
Yeah, what's a?

00:10:21.698 --> 00:10:25.312
What's going on with the club car urban?

00:10:27.005 --> 00:10:29.333
So the urban is a final mile delivery vehicle.

00:10:29.333 --> 00:10:36.335
Again, when you think about the EV space, there's been a lot of change there over the last 10 years.

00:10:36.335 --> 00:10:38.792
We're fighting for that space as well.

00:10:38.792 --> 00:10:42.475
Predominantly, europe is kind of the introduction to the urban.

00:10:42.475 --> 00:10:50.855
If you've traveled internationally, many of those cities kind of lock down around a five, six o'clock hour because of the tourists that come through the city.

00:10:50.855 --> 00:10:57.658
Very difficult when you've got 6,000-pound vehicles rolling through the city streets that are not wide enough for everybody.

00:10:57.658 --> 00:11:01.965
So they shut that down for protection but also to make it a nicer environment.

00:11:01.965 --> 00:11:03.611
But they still have to deliver goods.

00:11:04.504 --> 00:11:08.033
So the urban is kind of that vehicle that can deliver it.

00:11:08.033 --> 00:11:13.217
It's an electric vehicle, it's a small footprint and it's not over you know, call it 3,000 pounds.

00:11:13.217 --> 00:11:20.618
So the interaction with the population is much better, a lot safer and it doesn't go over 25 miles an hour.

00:11:20.618 --> 00:11:24.292
So we see that really emerging here in the United States.

00:11:24.292 --> 00:11:38.576
Predominantly it's on universities and campuses, municipalities, but we do see small towns and cities that are going to take on that sort of look of let's protect the community, let's shut down the cities from, call it, the big aspirated vehicles.

00:11:38.576 --> 00:11:41.532
And that's why urban is going to be very successful here.

00:11:41.532 --> 00:11:42.254
I like that.

00:11:43.096 --> 00:11:43.517
That's fun.

00:11:43.517 --> 00:11:44.605
What's the?

00:11:44.605 --> 00:11:45.106
What's the?

00:11:45.106 --> 00:11:46.349
And I'm just looking at.

00:11:46.349 --> 00:11:51.726
Notes that that Linthia sent Updates to your fleet management system.

00:11:53.028 --> 00:11:53.870
Yeah, so we have.

00:11:53.870 --> 00:11:59.187
We have an FT plus and it's an addition to what we call our visage.

00:11:59.187 --> 00:12:08.412
Okay, so visage is on the golf cart today, but we needed something that would be more commercial, and so on the commercial vehicles, there's still an interest in how to control the product.

00:12:08.412 --> 00:12:12.198
You can control it with speed, you can control where it goes.

00:12:12.198 --> 00:12:21.312
So the FT Plus now gives all of our commercial vehicles that same sort of capabilities and from an operator, you get to see where it exists inside of a certain footprint, right.

00:12:21.312 --> 00:12:22.697
So you create the geography.

00:12:22.697 --> 00:12:24.807
And then, where is it sitting?

00:12:24.807 --> 00:12:25.870
What's the dwell time?

00:12:25.870 --> 00:12:29.096
Are my people working or my people having a nap under the tree?

00:12:29.096 --> 00:12:35.278
You know they can get that sense and they can go drive improvement and efficiency and performance.

00:12:37.566 --> 00:12:38.711
Big brother coming after.

00:12:38.711 --> 00:12:49.254
I see how it is Maybe little brother, little brother cousin, the cousin, that, that weird cousin that we don't talk about at family gatherings, we all got them.

00:12:49.254 --> 00:12:50.758
We all got them.

00:12:50.758 --> 00:12:56.033
Anything else you want to touch?

00:12:56.072 --> 00:12:56.374
on bring up.

00:12:56.374 --> 00:13:01.395
We definitely have a whole consumer lineup, which I think is a lot of fun.

00:13:01.395 --> 00:13:03.211
You talked about having fun on the golf course.

00:13:03.211 --> 00:13:08.269
We now have that product for the consumer base, but it's a PTV.

00:13:08.269 --> 00:13:10.596
It was really designed for that consumer space.

00:13:10.596 --> 00:13:17.210
So something that's in the garage but you can enjoy your local community and environment.

00:13:17.210 --> 00:13:25.576
And if you see what's happening around the countryside, there's a lot of planned communities that are developing and a lot of people go, go home, put their car in the garage and they head out in their PTV.

00:13:25.576 --> 00:13:28.974
So again, it's a little Jeep experience.

00:13:28.974 --> 00:13:34.837
It's a different way to enjoy a lifestyle and we've got the new crew that just came out.

00:13:34.878 --> 00:13:41.017
So if you've not seen that, I have no need for one, but I want one, so bad.

00:13:41.216 --> 00:13:41.376
Like.

00:13:41.597 --> 00:13:42.785
I, I'm not even kidding.

00:13:42.785 --> 00:13:46.332
I want one in my studio, Like I want to be.

00:13:46.332 --> 00:13:51.948
I want to do my interviews sitting in a club car crew in my man cave.

00:13:52.690 --> 00:13:58.259
Like it's awesome, I love it and it's, it's a, it's a great product.

00:13:58.524 --> 00:14:02.034
When I went to the PGA show last year no lie, it was like I ran to that.

00:14:02.034 --> 00:14:08.456
But when I saw it in person, I was a kid in a candy store Like I could not be happier to sit in that thing.

00:14:09.357 --> 00:14:12.070
Yeah, I love that product and you know again same thing.

00:14:12.070 --> 00:14:18.424
You know we've had the Dallas Cowboys do rolling interviews with their cheerleaders and other football players.

00:14:18.424 --> 00:14:22.056
So it's just it's almost like confessions of a taxi cab, you remember that show.

00:14:22.056 --> 00:14:24.511
Just a great product to have fun with.

00:14:24.511 --> 00:14:35.317
That's obviously on the commercial side, but just from a personal consumer aspect, it's a great way for families to get around in their communities.

00:14:35.317 --> 00:14:37.323
And the nice thing about that product it's slightly larger than what you find in the market today.

00:14:37.323 --> 00:14:43.366
And we looked at it from a standpoint of hey, you got a lot of SUVs out there, right, and sometimes it can feel intimidating.

00:14:43.366 --> 00:14:50.379
Well, this is a product that you can put your family in and kind of compete for size and space but still be in an LSV.

00:14:50.418 --> 00:14:54.032
Yeah, Now it holds what like six people.

00:14:55.053 --> 00:14:55.716
It holds six people.

00:14:55.775 --> 00:14:59.975
Six people and I like the left seat swivels, or is it the driver's seat too?

00:15:01.086 --> 00:15:01.831
Yeah, both seats.

00:15:01.831 --> 00:15:13.058
It actually reverses the back support so you can switch it where you're now part of the compartment compartment and you're just enjoying the fireworks or a park or maybe just pizza in the park, right?

00:15:13.058 --> 00:15:17.972
So it's a lot of fun pizza in the park it's in the park pizza.

00:15:17.972 --> 00:15:19.196
I think we need to make a new show.

00:15:19.196 --> 00:15:19.596
Where do?

00:15:19.616 --> 00:15:21.547
you live that there's pizza that close to the?

00:15:21.547 --> 00:15:22.629
Where are you at?

00:15:22.629 --> 00:15:23.870
Where is this?

00:15:23.870 --> 00:15:24.952
Where is this heaven?

00:15:25.833 --> 00:15:27.777
I have Uber delivered to me.

00:15:33.866 --> 00:15:39.994
Domino's showing up in the middle, Mark Mark hello, like under a tree just hiding behind, pops out.

00:15:40.833 --> 00:15:42.395
You'll find me by the oak in the park.

00:15:42.395 --> 00:15:44.258
Yeah, they love that.

00:15:44.258 --> 00:15:45.078
They love that one.

00:15:45.639 --> 00:15:50.548
If the squirrels chase after you, just run Like they won't stay long, that's funny.

00:15:50.548 --> 00:15:53.537
No, this is fun.

00:15:53.537 --> 00:15:55.147
Anything else you want to touch on?

00:15:55.147 --> 00:15:56.629
Add any questions you want me to ask you?

00:15:58.373 --> 00:15:59.815
Let's think what else could we?

00:15:59.815 --> 00:16:05.594
I don't know, are you PGA show important?

00:16:05.594 --> 00:16:07.149
I'll probably be there.

00:16:08.485 --> 00:16:08.942
Yeah, it could be.

00:16:08.942 --> 00:16:09.187
What do you bring into the PGA show?

00:16:09.187 --> 00:16:09.696
Important, I'll probably be there.

00:16:09.696 --> 00:16:09.940
Yeah, it could be.

00:16:09.940 --> 00:16:13.169
What do you bring into the PGA show?

00:16:14.044 --> 00:16:15.129
Yeah, I mean so.

00:16:15.129 --> 00:16:23.390
Pga shows certainly a significant importance to our business as well as the rest of the golf space, but it's a great way for us to introduce new products.

00:16:23.390 --> 00:16:39.200
I know that you said earlier we've got a lot of new elements to our products that we're going to be showing off, so I just recommend people stopping by the booth and taking a look and getting a handle of what Club Car is doing to change the commercial, the consumer and the golf space.

00:16:39.200 --> 00:16:42.594
A lot of neat ideas that are coming to fruition.

00:16:43.546 --> 00:16:45.793
And you're even at the CMA A-Show correct.

00:16:46.926 --> 00:16:47.307
We do.

00:16:47.307 --> 00:16:49.916
It's not as big but we certainly participate.

00:16:49.916 --> 00:16:54.937
I mean, most of the folks in there are good friends of Club Car, so we like to support the CMAA.

00:16:54.937 --> 00:17:00.735
We do a lot of local chapter support, so you'll find us throughout the US with the local chapters there.

00:17:00.735 --> 00:17:02.168
But great organization.

00:17:02.168 --> 00:17:03.835
Yeah, that's all I got, okay.

00:17:06.226 --> 00:17:07.871
No, that was all pretty good.

00:17:07.871 --> 00:17:24.484
Like some of the other stuff really isn't like super like relevant, like talking about the president's cup and stuff like that, because it's like it's stuff they already kind of know, like it's yeah so because they're like we could, but then it's just wasting time at that point like it's just like, well, the only one thing we think, time.

00:17:24.505 --> 00:17:53.333
But like, yeah, yeah, the one thing I would share, and whether you do anything with us or not, that's up to you, but for us and we're going to be supporting, um, you know, big staff and customers coming into that uh opportunity.

00:17:53.333 --> 00:17:55.217
So that's exciting, for us really is.

00:17:55.217 --> 00:18:02.172
And so, again, it's just our first entree into the uh, the female tour that's awesome yeah welcome, congrats.

00:18:03.133 --> 00:18:05.836
I don't know what the Ta-da.

00:18:05.836 --> 00:18:13.948
Oh man, all right, well, hey, thank you for being here.

00:18:13.948 --> 00:18:14.769
I really appreciate this.

00:18:14.769 --> 00:18:15.790
This is a really fun chat.

00:18:16.652 --> 00:18:17.893
I've enjoyed talking to you.

00:18:17.893 --> 00:18:18.773
It's been fun.

00:18:18.773 --> 00:18:21.037
I hope to see you around now that I know who you are.

00:18:21.037 --> 00:18:29.750
I've heard your name but I've never actually had a chance to meet you and obviously we're at some of the same venues on a regular basis.

00:18:29.750 --> 00:18:33.729
But I've got your contacts and I'll let you know when I'm in an area and if you're there, let's let's connect some time.

00:18:33.749 --> 00:18:34.932
Have your people call my people.

00:18:35.605 --> 00:18:36.888
Your people call my people Be good.

00:18:36.888 --> 00:18:38.733
All right, man Sounds great.

00:18:38.733 --> 00:18:39.496
Thank you for your time.

00:18:40.265 --> 00:18:41.465
Hope you all enjoyed that.

00:18:41.465 --> 00:18:44.186
